Return to G.H.O.U.L.I. Home Page

G.H.O.U.L.I Is Proud to research and Investigate some of Oklahoma's Urban Legends. It seems that a lot of people confuse an Urban Legend with an actual "haunting". I love hearing about Urban Legends, and I personally have done a bit of research on them, simply because its a part of Oklahomas Heritage. If you have a Urban Legend, I will look it up for you! Remember, Our children and grandchildren (one day) will love these stories, what will you pass on? ----Tonya

Bigfoot Investigation Report

bigfoot1.jpg

Believe it or not, there are reported Bigfoot sitings throughout Oklahoma. We recently investigated a location where Bigfoot has reportedly been seen. Pictured left is an illustration of what eye witnesses have reported over the years. The "Creature" has been seen all over parts of rural Oklahoma. The "creatures" are usually found near natural springs & deep wooded areas, feeding on anything they can. Here in Oklahoma no one has reported of being attacked or even as much as chased by what we now call a "Bigfoot". One fact that we do know, is that the "creatures" fear humans, as much as we fear them... - T. Lewis

Pictured right are casts of what appear to be large non-human footprints. The gentleman standing next to the prints is over six feet tall and you can see how much larger the prints are than his feet.

Pictured left is the metal railing of a bridge that has been bent by an unknown source. The bridge is located in an area that has been reported with "Bigfoot" activity. There were no apparant markings on the railing that would signify that it was hit with any object such as a large hammer.

Pictured below are two photographs of files provided to us by a local "Bigfoot" investigative team.

The Vanishing Hitchhiker

Two guys were driving down the highway one night, when they see a lovely young girl standing by the road shivering. They stop and offer her a ride, and lent her an overcoat. When they dropped her off at her house, they forgot the overcoat as she got out. The next morning they dropped by to get it and see that the girl was ok, her mother told them her only daughter died in a car accident long ago, and showed them her grave as proof. Neatly folded on the grave was the over coat.

I have heard this one told many different ways. In some versions there is only one guy who picked up the girl. Other variations are that the girl disappears before they get to her destination, so the guys stop at the house to see what's going on. In most versions the girl died many years ago, but something like this happens every anniversary of her death. Usually she died in the place where the she is picked up alongside the road.

The Babysitter

banner2.jpg

What would an urban legends page be without the infamous babysitter story.

A teenage girl was babysitting some children in a large old house, the children were in bed and she was watching TV when the phone rang. The voice on the other end said "Have you checked on the children?" laughed and hung up, disregarding the call as a prank, the girl continued watching TV. Later that night it happened again, she was very upset and called the police who told her there was really nothing they could do, but they'd trace the call if it happened again. After she received another call saying "Have you checked on the children?", she hung up. The police immediately called her and told her to get out of the house immediately, the calls were coming from somewhere inside the house.

To see the actual film version of this legend, watch the film "When a Stranger Calls". This is a great movie, and very creepy.

The Concerned Mother

A man and wife were driving late one night when they were flagged down by a woman that appeared to be hurt. She claimed she'd been in an accident and her baby was alive but trapped in the car. The man told her to wait with his wife and he'd see what he could do. He got to the car and found a couple obviously dead in the front seat but a baby crying in a carseat. He cut the baby loose and returned to his own car. When he got there his wife was alone, he asked her where the woman had went and she replied that she'd followed him to the wreck. He left the baby with his wife and went back to the car to find her. When he got there he realized the woman who'd been killed in the front seat had been the one who'd flagged him down.

CARRIE'S PLACE

banner2.jpg

There is a legend in Oklahoma City, about a 5 year old girl that was murderd. Close to OCCCU Campus.

This took place around the 1970's. The little girl was supposedly murdered by her step-father.

Her body was chopped into peices, and buried throughout her neigborhood.

The neighborhood is still there today, it is a small alley among many streets. The house is gated, but the eerie sense of death is permantley attached to that neighborhhod.

Her head was said to be buried under a swing attached to a big old Oak tree in the back yard, and if you went there at night, even on a windless night, the swing would be swinging back and forth and laughter from a lonely little girl playing can be heard at times. The Driveway to the house is also painted red, this is to remind everyone of the blood-shed that occured .

Visions of the child have been reported wandering around in the streets, alone and looking for her family.

GRAVITY HILL

Gravity Hill Ardmore, Oklahoma

There is a story about a hill in Ardmore Oklahoma where a girl of about 16, that was kidnapped, raped, and murdered. The legend tells the story of how she died and how her abductors did it. The legend says to park your car on the white line that is spray-painted on the road. After you park your car there turn off the ignition and put the car in neutral. After doing so the legend says you must step out of your car. Then you will see you car being moved up hill. It is said that the girl is pushing the car away from that site for fear that the same thing that happened to her will happened to you. The legend also says that if you put baby powder on the back of the car you will see two hand prints where someone's hands would have been if they were trying to push the car.

I have also heard this same Legend in a different light.
The Legend I heard was that a school bus was hit by an oncoming train and all the children died in the accident. The rumor is that if you park on the tracks, you will be pushed uphill off the tracks to safety. I also heard the baby powder theory. We will be investigating this Urban Legend soon. We will keep you posted.

CRY BABY BRIDGE

Cry Baby Bridge:
(Newcastle/Tuttle Oklahoma & NationWide)

The story goes a little like this. Before Seat Belts were put into automobiles many mothers would lay their child down in the front seat for a ride.

The legend is that a woman and her infant were crossing the bridge and she lost control of the car. The baby was never to be found its rumored that it was washed down the river.
There are reports that if you sit quietly at this bridge, you can hear a baby crying, and if you are lucky you will capture a glimpse of the distraught mother who forever is looking for her child.

I have surfed the net, and it took me about 10 seconds to hit about 20 other cry baby stories. Apparently this has happened in almost every state and town in the US.

This is a wonderful Legend, I hope it continues to Linger in our State. Even though it may not be true, it would be fun to camp out and try to hear the baby cry and maybe catch a peek at the mother.

OKLAHOMA'S GOATMAN

....in southwest Ok at the edge of a small town. A creek runs by the property and overgrown fields lie between us and the town. One night 2 tears ago, my 13 year-old grandson and his friend were coming down the long road from town. They heard a noise behind them and turned in time to see a figure with long hair covering it's body and running upright on cloved feet. They ran home scared to death, and wouldn't go outside at night alone for several months"
